As a thirty-something product of the seventies, my fondest childhood possession was a boxed set of beautifully illustrated storybooks by the author Richard Scarry. I remember the characters so vividly and that there was something to learn about the way the world worked in each story. I can, without question, say that these and other books of that era are a big reason that I love to read to this very day. I believe one of the best things a parent can do is to give their child books that will inspire them to read.
While pregnant with our first child, my husband and I vowed to do our very best to provide our children with books and toys that would inspire and cultivate learning. We wanted to provide them with storybooks like the ones our parents gave us and to limit their exposure to the commercialism that could possibly stifle their imagination. I had to search far and wide for quality books and toys, especially for those that reflected images of children of color, be it African American, Latin, Asian, Indian, etc. After many hours logged on the internet and going to a variety of local stores, my search was fruitful, but I couldn't help thinking about those mothers that didn't have time to do such an extensive search. This thought sprouted Nairobi's Knapsack.
At Nairobi's Knapsack our goal is to be the premier online children's store that very busy parents can count on for select classic and multicultural children's books, as well as other wonderful accessories designed to inspire your child. You will find something for virtually every stage of childhood. All of which will inspire your children to learn while having fun. |
